Answer : In OSX 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion and 10.9 Mavericks, any TWAIN-supporting scanner can be used without any additional software. Ok so I have the CanoScan LiDe 55 (which canon doesn't have on their support site). I can confirm this is working on 10.6.8!
